Zsike Peter lost four clients within six months of ChatGPT's launch. She runs a copywriting business, so she did what you do with an enemy: she tried it, built bespoke GPT models for her own content, and then got so tired of identical LinkedIn clickbait that she wrote a book called Thinkbait. A consultant client who tried to replace her with AI came back after a year with falling engagement and dried-up DMs. Her thesis: stop selling output, sell your thinking.

What the talk covers

  • How freelancing slid downhill: it began with selling expertise, then time (day rates), then output (a logo, a blog post), then volume (monthly retainers). AI didn't cause this, it accelerated something that had been going on for 15 years.
  • Why that hurts: anyone can now produce a decent-looking post, website or newsletter. When everyone looks the same on paper, clients compare on price.
  • Describe what you think, not what you do. "I'm a copywriter" is a menu item. "Most B2B content sounds like a company wrote it, not a person" is a stance people can agree or disagree with.
  • Three freelancers she keeps meeting: the output hamster does more work for the same money. The tool stacker posts 37-step workflow diagrams, gets 900 comments and no clients. The intellectual freelancer has fewer clients and fewer hours but earns more, because he sells access to how he thinks.
  • She is pro-human, not anti-AI: use tools for admin and research, not to think on your behalf.

Q&A

How do you find unique ideas? Write them down, read fiction, handwrite. How do you work out your positioning? Build a ladder of offers, for example a 10 € ebook, a 30 € webinar, then a 350 € consultation, so people can try you cheaply first. What to say to a client who went AI-first? Show your results next to theirs. Where to get visible beyond LinkedIn? Podcasts, talks, free local workshops.
