A founder wanted to scale his company tenfold in a year, far too early. Darinka Burovska told him that what he needed was not business advice but a look at where his drive came from. He did not hire her. He did introduce her to three founders in his community, who did, and to his investors, and he invited her to speak at community events. Her point: she had seen him as a person, not a deal. The talk traces how she got there, through two burnouts and months of inner work.

What the talk covers

  • Burnout, reframed: she cites a Harvard researcher on adult development and calls burnout a developmental threshold, not a weakness. Her two burnouts followed external success and a clash with her values. In her view, misalignment burns you out, not workload.
  • Authenticity as inner work, not a branding exercise: hidden beliefs act like lenses on every decision. Her example is a kindergarten ballet dress at age five, which she traced to a belief that she had to be the best to deserve anything.
  • Clients are people: from "what do I get" to "what can I give".
  • Do your best, then let go of the outcome: no chasing, no discounts. When power and materials failed before one of her workshops, she stayed calm, and by her account that led to a new collaboration.

Two exercises

  1. Lens check: after a strong reaction, breathe and ask which version of you is reacting and where it comes from.
  2. A gratitude note each evening about small acts of service, not achievements.

Q&A

Can you burn out from what you love? Her answer: not while you love it, but you can change and keep doing it out of habit. An underlying mental health condition, she adds, needs different treatment.
