A client who might not pay was the first fear Jomiro Eming used to his advantage. At the start of his freelance career he had only a few clients, so every payment mattered. Instead of trying to calm down, he asked what the fear was pointing at, spent an hour writing a watertight design agreement, and began working only after the deposit arrived. That is the idea of his talk on 15 May 2025: fear, self-doubt and laziness are signals, not flaws.

What the talk covers

  • Mindset is the freelancer's strongest tool, he says, but it does not change in the heat of the moment, there is no hack, and he promises no instant retraining.
  • Fear: he points to the climber Alex Honnold, who says he still feels fear. Fear is a signal about something unknown. His example: he now invoices in chunks for riskier clients, starts only after the deposit and can add interest on late payments.
  • Self-doubt: it never goes away, not even for authors with decades of success. Ask where it comes from. Before a call with a dream client, doubt about a missing team-lead title becomes a prepared answer: name the gap at the start and point to the projects that cover it.
  • Laziness: he hates writing proposals. Instead of one for a new client he booked an hour-long call, covered their questions and then sent only a timeline and price, which was quicker and built the relationship. Laziness, in his view, asks what is unnecessary or too complex.

A reflection exercise

Think of a past moment of fear, doubt or laziness, when you are calm again, and ask what it was trying to tell you. A one percent shift counts.
