A sales rep joined Eva Rostock's self-defense class to feel safer. Three months later she told her trainer something else had changed: she argued more calmly with colleagues, held salary talks with her manager and closed bigger deals. Rostock, head coach of a self-defense school, says she sees this pattern again and again. In her talk on 14 May 2025 she explains why, and what freelancers can do.

What the talk covers

  • Why freelancers need it: you sell yourself first, with no team to fall back on, in constant pitches and negotiations.
  • Her explanation of stress: the brain reads uncertainty, fear of failure and fear of rejection as threats and switches the body to alarm. Unlike a predator, an inbox never goes away, so many people stay in alarm mode.
  • How physical training helps, in her model: tools first, then rising intensity, then a push to the point of failure, then repeating the same level until it works. The brain learns that it can handle the pressure.
  • Resilience as a learnable set of skills such as emotion regulation, impulse control, empathy and the belief that you can solve your problems.

Four quick tools

  1. Breathing: a long out-breath, such as four counts in and eight out, or box breathing.
  2. Wake up the body before a stressful moment: ten push-ups or moving to a favourite song.
  3. Sit upright, which she says clears your voice.
  4. A weekly confidence session, even 30 minutes, ideally with a coach or training buddy.

Q&A

Online personal trainers work for accountability, in-person training adapts better. Activities that demand focus, such as heavy lifts, help switch off work thoughts.
